What They Don’t Tell You About Aging (Until It’s Too Late)

Earlier Bedtime

Do you remember your grandparents dozing off in the middle of day and thinking, “Gosh, old people sleep a lot?” Chances are, they were just suffering from sleepless nights and exhausted from a day of dealing with grandchildren. Older adults do not need as much sleep as children and teenagers, interestingly. There was a study that looked at 110 participants divided up into two groups: those 40-55 years old and others between 66 and 83. It was found that the older group slept an average 20 minutes less than their younger peers.

Another reason older adults get less sleep than younger people is complications. Health issues, stress, and trouble staying asleep all impact the quality and length of their rest. In fact, people over 65 years old usually suffer from at least one sleep problem or have insomnia.

So, if you catch Mom and Pop dozing off after dinner, let them get a power nap.
